Eng Chye Tan became the 5th president of the National University of Singapore (NUS) in January 2018, marking a leadership role in Singapore’s oldest higher education institution. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with first class honors from NUS and a PhD from Yale University. Since joining NUS as a faculty member in 1985, he has contributed significantly to mathematics, focusing on areas such as representation theory and invariant theory.

He is renowned for his educational innovations, shaping NUS’s academic landscape with initiatives like the special program in science and the university scholars program. He has authored multiple books and over 20 articles in esteemed journals, establishing himself as a distinguished mathematician and educator. His leadership extends beyond NUS, serving on various boards including the National Research Foundation and Singapore Economic Development Board.

Recognized with accolades such as the Public Administration Medal (Gold)the Meritorious Service Medal and the Wilbur Lucius Cross Medal from Yale University, he has received honorary doctorates from the University of Southampton and Universiti Malaya. His international influence is underscored by his advisory roles at institutions like the Southern University of Science and Technology in China and the global think tank, The Conference Board.

In 2022, he was knighted as a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur by the French government, honoring his exceptional contributions to education and research. His career is marked by a steadfast commitment to advancing academic excellence and interdisciplinary learning, making him a pivotal figure in global higher education.
