Example · Clinician or rehabilitation professional
What evidence and continuing support would our programme need to examine?
A clinician examines the distance between a supervised study and a proposed care setting
The situation
Clinical motor rehabilitation
You lead a rehabilitation programme considering an implant-enabled BCI project for people with substantial motor impairment. The proposal describes neural recording and decoding within supervised sessions. You need to identify evidence and service arrangements to examine before your institution considers a detailed clinical evaluation
What this example starts with
- The hypothetical proposal
- The project describes supervised motor tasks, specialist technical support and a proposed transition from a study team to your programme
- The missing evidence
- Assume the supplied record does not establish outcomes meaningful to your patients, suitability for your setting or support after the study ends
- The institutional question
- Your programme needs to understand surgical, software, neurodata and follow-up responsibilities alongside the proposed benefit and alternatives
Working through the question
Connect the claim to a functional goal
You review which task the project proposes to change and whether its evidence addresses a meaningful activity for the intended people. Performance during a supervised task would leave separate questions about daily function, burden and comparison with the rehabilitation options already available
Examine the change in setting
The assessment helps you distinguish a supported study session from adoption by your programme. You look for the staffing, training and calibration assumptions behind that transition. A missing service description is recorded as an evidence request, rather than filled with an optimistic assumption
Follow the dependency beyond the pilot
You consider a software change, fragmented care pathway or vendor exit. These scenarios identify responsibility and continuity questions beyond the supervised session. They neither assign probabilities nor establish that your institution could absorb obligations currently carried by the project team
An illustrative take-away
An agenda for clinical evaluation
You prepare a review note linking the functional goal to evidence requests and unresolved service responsibilities
- Which outcomes address the proposed functional goal and relevant alternatives?
- Who would support calibration, updates and neurodata handling in our setting?
- What follow-up and continuity arrangements would remain if the study or vendor support ended?
