Anticipation Observatory
GESDA’s Science Breakthrough Radar® provides an overview of science trends and breakthrough predictions at 5, 10 and 25 years, covering today 40 science and technology emerging topics in five major fields of science and technology.
To effectively anticipate the science and its early uses, but also anticipate how to apply science and technology breakthroughs to their needs and contexts, public and private leaders need a reliable and efficient way of accessing information and correlating it meaningfully to understand the landscape.
To do so, GESDA is working with global partners on delivering by 2026 the Anticipation Observatory, an expert-curated, AI-augmented intelligence tool on expected scientific trends and their implications for diplomacy, business and society for all 40 emerging topics covered by the Science Breakthrough Radar.
The Anticipation Observatory forms part of GESDA’s Anticipation Gateway Initiative, aiming at democratizing the early understanding and the early uses of emerging science. If we succeed in doing this at scale, all of society will have more time to prepare for these changes with the best possible transitions, be it for prosperity, security or personal development. The key to do it is to increase at the same time the literacy and the ability to act of as many people we can.
How is it different than an internet search?
The Anticipation Observatory is an intelligence tool augmenting science data collected in the Radar with key information on governance, market and public opinion from trusted sources.
The curated database combines expert-curated knowledge with tailor-made AI-augmented intelligence to support decision-makers in understanding at the same time where emerging science and technology is heading, what regulations do or do not exist, whether R&D is hitting the market, and where public opinions lie in those fields.
Creating such a trusted digital platform requires understanding the intelligence needs of the different user groups and how they search for information. It also needs to be designed innovatively to be able to navigate and mine databases from very different sources and propose coherent responses.
Its uniqueness will be for the users to be able to filter the collection of information through three specific lenses – prosperity & development, peace & security and human rights (the UN Pillars) – as well as get a sense of what is “cooking in the labs” of all communities through Pulses of science, diplomacy, impact, and citizens.
First pilot: A Neurotechnology Intelligence Tool for diplomats
As the field of neurotechnology is being heavily discussed in diplomacy circles such as the UN Human Rights Council while at the same time private investments and citizens debates are increasing, GESDA has chosen to focus on this emerging topic for its first demonstrator of the Anticipation Observatory.
This prototype to be launched by the end of 2024 is currently being tested by GESDA’s diplomacy community who is helping design the tool to ensure it is useful and relevant.

Second pilot: A new intelligence feature for GESDA’s Radar
We are now also testing a new AI assisted search tool to dive into the 40 emerging scientific topics of the GESDA Science Breakthrough Radar®.
The RadarAI is specifically trained on GESDA’s Scientific Platforms and its knowledge archive to help you understand the science “cooking in the labs” which will emerge in 5, 10 or 25 years. Choose to chat or select a type of response.
